Getting started with IOTA

Short, step-by-step guides for IOTA Mobile and IOTA for Windows.

IOTA Mobile

Getting started

IOTA Mobile runs an AI model on your phone. It needs a 64-bit Android phone with Android 9 or later.

  1. Open the closed alpha link with the Google account you were invited with, tap to become a tester, then install IOTA from Google Play. If you have not been invited, email IOTA.LLC.Business.Inquiries@gmail.com.
  2. On first launch, pick one model to download. Tiny (Gemma 3 1B) is the fastest. Small (Gemma 4 E2B) is a balance of speed and quality. Normal (Nemotron 3 Nano 4B) is the most capable and the slowest. Downloads are 0.7 to 2.8 GB, so Wi-Fi is recommended.
  3. Type a message and tap send. The first message after the model loads can take 30 seconds to 2 minutes while the model moves into memory. Later replies are much faster.
  4. Tap Stop to end a reply early. Open the side menu for a new chat, saved chats, and Settings.
  5. Web search is off by default. Tap Online at the top of the chat when you want current facts. Tap it again to go back offline.
  6. To change models later, open Settings > Models. You can add, switch, or delete models there.

Deep Research

Deep Research is a prompt and leave mode. IOTA plans several web searches, reads the results, and reasons through them step by step. All of that runs on the phone's own processor, so an answer takes several minutes. Running it faster would make the answers worse.

  1. Turn on Online. Deep Research searches the web, so it needs a connection.
  2. Turn on Deep Research in the chat.
  3. Turn on Allow background running in Settings, so the work keeps going when you leave the app. This uses more battery.
  4. Ask your question, then leave the app if you like. A notification shows progress.
  5. You get a notification when the answer is ready. Tap it to open the reply.
  6. To end it early, tap Stop.

Memory and saving chats

Memory is off by default. While it is off, new chats are not saved, and a chat ends when you close it. Everything you turn on here is stored only on your phone.

  1. Open the menu, then Memory. It has two switches: Save chats and Permanent memory.
  2. Turn on Save chats to keep chat history. Saved chats are listed in the menu. Tap one to reopen it, or tap ⋮ next to it to rename or delete it.
  3. Turn on Permanent memory to keep facts that every future chat can use. Add one by typing /remember followed by the fact, for example /remember I live in Tulsa, or add it on the Memory page.
  4. You can view, edit, or delete saved facts on the Memory page, and delete saved chats at any time.

IOTA for Windows

Setup

IOTA for Windows runs from a USB kit and works offline. It is not publicly available yet. Request access.

  1. Plug in the IOTA USB kit, or copy the whole kit folder to your PC.
  2. Double-click run-iota-gui.bat in the kit folder to open IOTA.
  3. Pick a model. IOTA uses a supported NVIDIA graphics card when the PC has one, and runs on the CPU when it does not.
  4. Send a short message to check that the reply streams in and that Stop works.
  5. Use the chat sidebar to start chats and group them into projects.
  6. Add your files to a knowledge base so IOTA can answer from them, and type / to see skills such as /chart, /pdf, and /units.

Replies from AI can be wrong. Do not rely on them for medical, legal, financial, or safety decisions.
